Erotic More than 5,000 WordPress websites plagued with Keylogger

In reality, this script loaded a cognitive cryptocurrency miner from a third-party server.

We also mentioned a post written back in April that described the Cloudflare.solutions malware, which came along with the crypto miners. At this moment, PublcWWW reports there are 5,482 sites infected with this malware. It seems that this evolving campaign is now adding keyloggers to the mix.

The injected part of this malware didn’t change at all, using the theme’s function.php to enqueue the following scripts to WordPress pages: The script URLs are also the same, however, they use a fake CloudFlare domain. The first one (reconnecting-websocket.js) still loads a copy of a legitimate ReconnectingWebSocket library.

What Changed Since April?

The first change is the main page of this domain now says:

“This server is part of an experimental science machine learning algorithms project”
instead of

“This Server is part of Cloudflare Distribution Network.”

The second change is the cors.js script. Now when you decode it, there is no outright suspicious code like those banner images in the previous version. The only sketchy thing is that the script loads the Yandex.Metrika (Yandex’s alternative to Google Analytics). Most likely it is done to track the infected sites. By the way, the Yandex id of that script is 43930119 – it can also be found in the HTML code of the domain’s main page.

Fake linter.js URLs Turn Into a Keylogger wordpress

Then you might notice two cdnjs.cloudflare.com URLs with long hexadecimal parameters:

This time the domain names really belong to CloudFlare and you might think it’s something legitimate. However, if you check the https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/linter/linter.js URL, you’ll notice that it doesn’t actually exist. When you check the code using those linterkey variables, you realize that the cdnjs.cloudflare.com is just a red herring and the real payloads are those hexadecimal numbers after the question mark in the URLs. The script decodes them and injects the following result into web pages:

As you can see, it’s a keylogger. This script adds a handler to every input field on the websites to send its value to the attacker (wss://cloudflare[.]solutions:8085/) when a user leaves that field.

What sort of data can be stolen this way? Since we are talking about WordPress sites, such sites usually have search boxes and comment forms. This might not be that interesting to the bad guys. But what if the WordPress site has some e-commerce functionality and embeds a checkout form? This scenario allows a hacker to steal the payment details.

And of course, every WordPress site has a login form. Hackers don’t disregard approximately that, so they add this code that injects the cloudflare[.]solutions keylogger to the login page as well.

As you can see, both the username and the password were sent to the cloudflare[.]solutions the server even before a user clicks on the “Login” button.

Mitigation

As we already mentioned, the malicious code resides in the function.php file of the WordPress theme. You should remove the add_js_scripts function and all the add_action clauses that mention add_js_scripts. Given the keylogger functionality of this malware, you should consider all WordPress passwords compromised so the next obligatory step of the cleanup is replacing the signals (actually it is highly recommended after any site hack). Don’t forget to check your site for other infections too. Many sites with the Cloudflare.solutions malware also have injected cognitive cryptocurrency miner scripts.
